Reduce the effects of heatwaves
Find out how to mitigate risks and prepare your school for future heatwaves as temperatures continue to rise
Explore practical ways to reduce overheating, protect pupils and staff, and build more heat-resilient schools at Islington Clean Air Parents heatwaves workshop, organised in partnership with Islington Borough Council and Islington Climate Centre
Schools are increasingly facing the challenge of keeping pupils and staff safe during extreme heat. Join our practical workshop exploring how schools can prepare for heatwaves and create healthier, more resilient learning environments.
Heatwaves increase air pollution as well as making it more difficult for children to learn, and teachers to work.
The workshop will bring together school leaders from across Islington to share experiences, hear from experts and explore practical solutions to overheating โ from shading, ventilation and passive cooling to longer-term improvements to school buildings and grounds.
During the peak of the June heatwave, more than 1000 schools closed or partly closed in England and Wales. Department of Education (DfE) statistics show one in five session of school in England were missed – the highest daily absence rate so far during the 2025-26 academic year
