Islington Forest for Change

Creating green spaces in Islington improves and supports clean air, biodiversity and urban spaces and, crucially, provides safe outdoor spaces for children.

The Islington Forest for Change was originally a derelict green space that was uninviting for people to visit. It has been transformed by Islington Clean Air Parents and local volunteers into a pocket urban wildlife area with trees, bee hotels and wildflowers. We are always looking for green fingered or enthusiastic volunteers who would like to spend more time in nature and look after this community forest garden.

Islington Forest for Change: first trees planted

The first trees of our Islington Forest for Change project have been planted! Four of the trees originally part of the Somerset House exhibition were planted in an under-used open space near Liverpool Road on Friday 22nd October. Children from local schools helped to plant the first tree, a silver…

Reducing Vehicle Emissions

Vehicles are the largest source of air pollution in Islington so we campaign to make our streets safer and cleaner to encourage active travel. Walking, cycling and scooting is not only better for our environment but also great for our health.

We campaign to reduce car ownership and car journeys across islington. We support switching public transport to electric buses and taxis and improve air quality on main roads in the borough.

Low Traffic Neighbourhoods (LTNs) are a way of reducing the level of motor traffic passing through residential streets. They are created by local councils to reduce the ability of traffic to rat-run through smaller residential roads so that these streets become welcoming to pedestrians, people using wheelchairs and cyclists alike.

Let’s avoid congestion and pollution on the school run

As we return to the daily school routine, Islington Clean Air Parents are joining Transport for London, Islington Council and the Mayor of London in encouraging people to walk, cycle or scoot to and from school.  We know it’s not always easy, especially when it’s wet, you’re running late, or…

Legislation and consultation

We are a campaigning group, and the majority of our work is aimed at improving legislation, regulations and guidance around clean air. Already, as a result of our work, clean air appears on manifestos and in the lead up to the 2024 UK elections, clean air was a hot topic at the Environment Hustings in Islington.

Effective campaigning often takes the form of lobbying MPs and local Councillors and we are always happy to share ideas and templates to help make campaigns more effective.

We feed into and respond to the council’s Clean Air strategies and have been successful in getting WHO targets included in the documents.
